NORTHERN LIGHTS
FRUIT & VEGETABLE CO.
Welcome!
Our produce is started from seed in our own greenhouse and grown without the use of herbicides, pesticides or manufactured fertilizers. Under the Produce heading you will find a list of items that we plan to grow this year. In addition to providing you with local fruits and vegetables, we also offer farm fresh eggs from the NLFVC Egg Co-op, which brings four local producers together. All co-op members maintain free range/barn roaming birds including Leghorn and Rhode Island Red chickens, as well as several heritage breeds. We also carry local honey in partnership with Crocus Hills Ranch (Grimshaw, Ab.), and we are an authorized distributor of Peifer Feeds (Hines Creek, Ab.). Contact us for a complete product list and details about our feed delivery service. See our weekly Facebook posts, or subscribe to our weekly email newsletter for the latest product information and ordering details. We offer microgreens, eggs, honey and feeds year-round. We also have subscription programs for both eggs and microgreens, which can put you at the front of the weekly queue.
NLFVC Values Sustainability
We have completed the installation of Phase 1 of our solar program consisting of 8.7 kWh of capacity. This provides about 10,000 kWh annually, which is approximately 3000kWh short of our business related power needs. We plan to do Phase 2 in 2024. This will consist of moving the array to the roof of the new workshop building and expanding it to 12kWh, which will meet all of our needs and offset our use of carbon based electricity.
We have a large composting setup that allows us to return nutrients to the soil with minimum wastage. Our poultry operation also allows us to convert a wide range of organic wastes into rich compostable material. We are interested in partnering with local restaurants and are happy to discuss diverting their organics from the landfill to our farm
All our water needs are met naturally through runoff collected in our dugout and rain in barrels and large tanks. The water quality of the dugout will be improved by the addition of a windmill aeration system and removing some of the organics that have accumulated over time. The rain water is kept safe by shocking the water and this is monitored throughout the season. We also pass this water through an ultraviolet filter to further improve the quality. In a nod to covid, we introduced the periodic use of germicidal UV C bulbs in all of our produce handling and storage areas, as well as in the various chicken coops when the birds are out and about.
Community Shared Agriculture (CSA) Program - The Weekly Veggie Bag
We will not be offering a CSA Program in 2024.
Good Neighbour Program
We will be continuing our Good Neighbour Program. Patrons donate funds to subsidize the veg purchases of a household where there is a fixed, or limited income. We discount their purchases by 25%, and the NLFVC Egg Co-op donated a doz eggs/household each week upon request. Last year we had four households participating. If you would like to support our Good Neighbour Program please contact us to discuss.
Farm Fresh Free Range Egg Subscription Service & Egg CSA
We make NLFVC Egg Co-op eggs available through our subscription program. People can sign up to receive a few dozen eggs each week or maybe a dozen every two weeks. We deliver the eggs year-round, to work or home throughout the area from Manning to Peace River, Grimshaw to Weberville. Eggs are $6/doz. We also have an Egg CSA Program. Participants pay a fee up front based on their anticipated consumption and we guarantee their supply of eggs for the duration of the year. If you are interested in getting eggs, then please send us an e-mail (info@northernlightsproduce.com) and if we have room we’ll start you right away, otherwise we’ll put you on the waitlist. When a spot opens up, we’ll check back with you to see if you are still interested. While on the waitlist we’ll get you eggs as often as we can as other people pause their deliveries and production fluctuates.
Online Sales and Our Veg Stand
You can access all our products year-round in two ways. First, you can follow us on Facebook or Instagram and see our weekly Friday night posts highlighting what’s available throughout the year. Second, you can have this information and farm updates delivered to your Inbox every Friday night by joining our mailing list. If you would like to be on our mailing list, then please send us an e-mail (info@northernlightsproduce.com). Once the season gets going we will be operating our veg stand in Peace River again, and we will be returning to Manning in 2024. Expect to see us from about 1 to 5 pm every Wednesday afternoon in Manning located in the vacant lot across from the IDA, and every Thursday in Peace River downtown in the parking lot beside the Dollar Store across from All Donair. We’ll post to Facebook and Instagram what produce will be available at the stand the evening prior.
